Uncle Art 3
COMPETITION TIME!
Holly here!
We’re holding a little competition for the Uncle Art Kickstarter for you to win the £250 reward which is a Sit In On The Mix reward where you get to be Mix Consultant for the day in the studio with us, and you also get the £80 reward of your choice which is basically everything: CD, Vinyl, T Shirt plus you can get including the Bonus CD signed by Jez San as well as Dave Lowe which is a really nice collector’s item!
OK so the competition is based on the original Uncle Art Starglider 2 piece of music which was the extended piece of studio music you got on the bonus cassette with the game. It’s a fantastic piece – one of my personal favourites in fact – and hear it is in its full re-mastered glory.
And you might notice there’s some beeping toward the end… well this isn’t just random beeping! It’s a secret Morse Code message! My dad asked my Grandad on my mum’s side who was a Master Pilot and flew Spitfires and Hurricanes (and Mosquitos as you can see his little Mosquito badge on the game box in the photo) and he told my dad the speed at which proper morse code messages are sent and so this was recreated. As a test they played him the final version and he got it in one listen straight off! So the competition is for you to tell us what the secret Morse message is!
So any Morse Coders out there – this could be your chance to win!
To enter: You must be a backer at £15 or above on the Kickstarter and first person to correctly state what the Morse says in the Comments section of the Kickstarter wins the prize! There may be some lower level rewards for good efforts if they’re not quite bang on too!
Link to the Kickstarter is here: UNCLE ART KICKSTARTER: A TEMPORAL SHIFT
To make it a bit easier for you, we’ve taken the section with the Morse and filtered it so you can hear it clearer!
Good luck!! And happy coding!
THERE’S A RINGER ON THE INTERNET UNDER A GOOGLE SEARCH SO WE WILL KNOW IF YOU’VE CHEATED!
We have definitely decided to do the orchestra session at Abbey Road studios! To us, it’s something quite special – we’ve worked in pretty much every big studio in London (Townhouse, Olympic, Sphere, Air, Rak, Metropolis, The Barge, Konk) apart from Abbey Road! So it’s a big deal for us. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you how iconic the studio is….
Now we’re going to hire Abbey Road for the whole day – the The Chamber Orchestra of London recording the Frontier Elite 2 main and second themes will take about 3 hours, and then we’ll be there the rest of the day also to record all the drums we need on the album and also any other bits of live music that we can’t physically fit into the Uncle Art studio.
We’ve had a lot of really great musicians and producers want to be involved in this project, and we’re very happy to have them help out. As much as we can cover a lot of the instruments ourselves, there’s nothing like collaborating with other people to really come up with the freshest ideas and make you look and hear things a different way. Here’s some of the people involved so far:
* Dave Bascombe: Producer / Mix Producer – Tears For Fears, Goldfrapp, Peter Gabriel, Placebo, Suede, Depeche Mode
– Dave came onboard as the producer on the album I made for Mercury Records – I was signed there as a singer songwriter when I was 17 and my dad and Dave co-produced the album with me on Pete Townsend’s Barge studio in Twickenham on the river. It was an amazing experience and Dave’s a proper dude – in fact he’s a bit like ‘The Dude’ in the Big Lebowski! He’s ace and we’re really excited to have him on board with this project also.
*Ben Darlow – Engineer / Mix Producer – Mike Oldfield, Randy Crawford, Erasure,
– Ben also was the engineer on my Mercury album and we like him so much we make him work with us loads! He’s mixed another album of mine and because he’s so good at recording drums we get him to engineer every drum session we do!
*Bob Scott – Drummer
– Bob is the MAN and could be working with the top players in the world full time, but instead he likes to run a florist shop in Darlington! Everybody we have worked with who then engineers / produces / witnesses Bob on a session / gig is blown away! To see Bob play – and we’ve seen him do 22 songs in one day in one take each straight off – it’s just something you can’t describe in words! It gives you pure joy to see such a master at work – I don’t rave about musicians like this lightly. Bob is the man
And then on top of these people who will be at Abbey Road working that day we do the session, we’re hoping to have the following people involved and come along too:
*Jeff Lowe – ‘Uncle Jeff’ – Dave Lowe’s brother, tremendously talented songwriter, guitarist, singer & producer FUNKY AND INTRICATE AS HELL!!! – Check out Jeff’s albums of his own stuff that we all feature on too – http://www.jefflowemusic.com/
*Nick Paige – Such a SICK pianist he had to unlearn everything he’d learnt in order to find the real groove! – Stevie Wonder,
*Gav Slater – Helping me bring down the average age a bit! One of my gen awesome guitarist just finished up touring Wolf Gang – main support on Coldplay US tour and then headline world tour. Excellent afro!
*Dave Greaves – Super cool straight from the 60s guitarist, specialist in wacky tunings, country, slide & blues guitar. Toured with John Martin for years in the ‘good old days’ genuine grumpy old man / out-of-place hippy!
And then of course also in the Abbey Road session will be
*Lucy Lowe – sister and daughter, actress and voice actor turning to the other side of the lens to shoot the ‘making of’ documentary!
*Jez San – Of Starglider, Amiga, Atari, Nintendo fame will be coming down to the session and signing a bunch of the original gaming music bonus CDs!
Plus THE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA OF LONDON!
Maybe it will look a bit more like this:
So come and join us! Check the Kickstarter for the rewards and find the Abbey Road reward – you can even bring a plus one!!
But only if you’re willing to recreate this too:
But in order to make this happen – we still need backers! Lots of backers! We’re into the last week! Don’t delay – we need your support! Believe in something great!! Believe in music. Believe in live musicians. Believe in Uncle Art!

Big news for Starglider, Amiga, Atari and all-things-progressive fans! Jez San has come onboard with our Kickstarter project now! He’s going to come down to the Abbey Road sessions with us and sign a whole bunch of the original gaming music CDs too!
Check the Kickstarter page NOW as these rewards are limited quantity!
I’m sure you all know who Jez is, but if you don’t then seriously do some reading up about him. This is the man responsible for Starglider 1 & 2 – the first 3D style graphics in a game ever! The first person to create a game developing company! The first person to develop the 3D chip for Nintendo (the story of how he did this is incredible!) and now he owns PKR one of the biggest and 3D online poker sites!
It was Jez who my dad Dave Lowe worked closely with to get the sampled studio music with real vocals and synths playing out of the Atari ST in 1986 long before tracker music. Another first!
As Jez will be down at Abbey Road with us – we can interview both him and Dave about these Starglider days in the documentary that Lucy Lowe will be filming. It’s really exciting! I’m excited! Are you?! Then make sure you BACK THE KICKSTARTER to make this happen!
