This is a deleted version of the final scene in Sense and Sensibility. They take a walk through the countryside and make small chit-chat and then turn to the actual matter in hand in a very British and stilted way – that he actually loves her! And then after a painstaking amount of hesitation, they kiss.
We went for a simple piano melody behind the dialogue which changes to a more minor key when he turns the talk to that of Colonel Brandon whom he though she was in love with. At this point we don’t quite know that he hasn’t taken that as read and that he has married someone else. But then the music resolves back to a happier major as he announces that she is in fact the woman he did love, or does love. Then the build up – enter the strings with small pauses to match his hestitations. Will he kiss her? He’s leaning in, he’s not sure, he’s embarassed… oh he’s gone in for it! Cue the big strings to take over the piano melody and a cello to fill out the bottom end as we swell into the final black screen of the film!
