This is a deleted scene from the movie ‘Atonement’ depicting a soldier at war who is losing his way, shell-shocked and being led through a factory of sleeping and injured soldiers. It is a mysterious scene and we wanted to create a sense of dizziness, of bewilderment. The fact that the film is so beautifully shot and that it contained no dialogue made us look at it a little differently. We approached the scene as if it were a ballet (the soldier carrying the flare actually does a chainĂ© – a stepping turn – at one point) so we composed a balletic piano and string waltz to fit with the movement. It also gives a slightly foreign french feel to fit with the war theme and the fact that is far away from home and from his love.
